Prayer and Teaching of the Disciples

Think about God. Make much of Him, till He broadens and fills the horizon of faith. Then prayer will come into its marvelous inheritance of wonders. The marvels of prayer are seen when we remember that God’s purposes are changed by prayer, God’s vengeance is stayed by prayer, and God’s penalty is remitted by prayer. The whole range of God’s dealing with man is affected by prayer. Here is a force which must be increasingly used, that of prayer, a force to which all the events of life ought to be subjected. A Prayer of Jesus

While the disciples were no doubt saddened, and perhaps more than a little frightened, that their Lord had risen to heaven, they were heartened by His promise that a Comforter would be sent to them and they were filled with triumphant gladness that the work of the Savior had been completed – both for them and for all who accepted the Gospel message they would soon be delivering.

A Prayer of Jesus

The victory has been won. The price has been paid. The world has been redeemed. With His dying breath, Jesus returns to the Father who sent Him, ready to take His place on the Throne of Judgment; ready to prepare a place for those who believe and call upon His name for their salvation.

A Prayer of Jesus

Imagine: At the foot of the blood-stained cross that held the precious, dying body of the world’s Savior, crude, unfeeling soldiers callously and casually gambled for the few possessions He owned. Had they an inkling of what was really transpiring at that moment, even these rough-hewn men would have fallen to their knees and cried for mercy. Jesus, despite His misery, demonstrates His infinite love in this prayer; forgiving those who blindly ignore Him – just as so many refuse to recognize Him today.

A Prayer of Jesus

This prayer reveals the magnitude of the suffering Christ endured on the cross. The foreknowledge of what awaited Him – the cruelty of Roman torture, the agony of crucifixion, the abandonment of the Father as He bore our sins – was enough to draw beads of blood from His brow. Yet, despite His anguish, He returns to the disciples and encourages them to pray and prepare for what lay ahead. In this magnificent scene we witness that Jesus is not only our eternal Redeemer, He is also our ever patient Teacher and our ever abiding Shepherd.

A Prayer of Jesus

Perhaps more than any other disciple, Peter best represents how God is able to take an imperfect person and use them in glorious ways. Brash and impulsive, he needed the intercessory prayers of Jesus to hold and keep him until he could grow to maturity and take his place as a leader in the early church. Praying for others is the most wonderful gift anyone can offer. It’s also an honor and privilege to share in the life of a fellow believer in such a powerful yet quietly personal way.

A Prayer of Jesus

Faith does the impossible because it brings God to undertake for us, and nothing is impossible with God. How great, without qualification or limitation, is the power of faith! If doubt be banished from the heart, and unbelief made stranger there, what we ask of God shall surely come to pass. (Adapted from E.M. Bounds, The Necessity of Prayer)

A Prayer of Jesus

That the Father may be glorified in the Son:it is to this end that Jesus on His throne in glory will do all we ask in His Name. Every answer to prayer He gives will have this as its object: when there is no prospect of this object being obtained, He will not answer. It follows as a matter of course that this must be with us, as with Jesus, the essential element in our petitions: the glory of the Father must be the aim and end, the very soul and life of our prayer.
